Think of your diaphragm as a Blacksmiths hands and your lungs as the Bellows. The Blacksmith is in full control of how much air is taken in and how quickly it is expelled. Using the diaphragm you too can have complete control of the air you use. Place your hand on your belly button, take a deep breath in, make sure your shoulders do not move, you should feel your stomach get bigger. Exhale the air, feel your stomach contract. [get smaller]

So the rule is: Breath in = stomach out.
            Breath out =
stomach in.

This is the first lesson, practice this every chance you get, until it becomes your normal way of breathing. Remember, when singing you should always take in more air than you need, the excess air supports your voice. To get the air in without vocalizing the sound you need to open your mouth wide on the intake. [at least two fingers between your teeth]  When singing there are times when you do not have much time to inhale, so practice inhaling quickly. The secret to great  singing, is breath control, so when practicing this technique  let the air out as slowly as possible.

To practice breathing and pitch control, scales are invaluable. You will hear a series of notes [arpeggio] then a chord.
Take in your breath on the chord and sing the next series of notes. These exercise help get the mechanics of singing correct.
